Ageism
Itis assumed that the loss of faculties with age is a "natural' part of aging. However, much is known about the pathological processes leading to these deteriorations. Is there an insidious form of ageism in assuming that this should not be treated?

Glutathione (GSH) plays an important role in a multitude of cellular processes, including cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis, and as a result, disturbances in GSH homeostasis are implicated in the etiology and/or progression of a number of human diseases, including cancer, diseases of aging, cystic fibrosis, and cardiovascular, inflammatory, immune, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases. Owing to the pleiotropic effects of GSH on cell functions, it has been quite difficult to define the role of GSH in the onset and/or the expression of human diseases, although significant progress is being made. GSH levels, turnover rates, and/or oxidation state can be compromised by inherited or acquired defects in the enzymes, transporters, signaling molecules, or transcription factors that are involved in its homeostasis, or from exposure to reactive chemicals or metabolic intermediates. GSH deficiency or a decrease in the GSH/glutathione disulfide ratio manifests itself largely through an increased susceptibility to oxidative stress, and the resulting damage is thought to be involved in diseases, such as cancer, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease. In addition, imbalances in GSH levels affect immune system function, and are thought to play a role in the aging process. Just as low intracellular GSH levels decrease cellular antioxidant capacity, elevated GSH levels generally increase antioxidant capacity and resistance to oxidative stress, and this is observed in many cancer cells. The higher GSH levels in some tumor cells are also typically associated with higher levels of GSH-related enzymes and transporters. Although neither the mechanism nor the implications of these changes are well defined, the high GSH content makes cancer cells chemoresistant, which is a major factor that limits drug treatment. The present report highlights and integrates the growing connections between imbalances in GSH homeostasis and a multitude of human diseases.

Air ionisers wipe out hospital infections
New Scientist
3 January 2003 by Natasha McDowell
Repeated airborne infections of the bacteria acinetobacter in an intensive care ward have been eliminated by the installation of a negative air ioniser.
In the first such epidemiological study, researchers found that the infection rate fell to zero during the year long trial. "We were absolutely astounded to find such clear cut results," engineer Clive Begg at the University of Leeds, UK, told New Scientist.
Upper-Room Ultraviolet Light and Negative Air Ionization to Prevent Tuberculosis Transmission
Upper-room UV lights and negative air ionization each prevented most airborne TB transmission detectable by guinea pig air sampling. Provided there is adequate mixing of room air, upper-room UV light is an effective, low-cost intervention for use in TB infection control in high-risk clinical settings.

Does God exist? Part 2
One of the great miseries of the discussion between those who believe and those who don't is their shared inability to look a very simple, now scientific fact: that a large proportion of humans hear a voice (or many) every day or at some point in their lives.
For positivists, this can only be some form of psychosis. Sadly, for most religious folks, it's something similar. It should not be compared to the authorized trances of mystics and prophets.
Rarely is it, for any of those involved in the debate, a fact that deserves more attention.
It is sad, first, because it puts a dark veil on a rather common experience for the founders on most early civilizations.
It is also ill-advised to ignore it because it is a solid foundation on which to start a discussion on a topic that inevitably ends, otherwiase, with the problem of evil... the toughest one.
And finally, it is a dishonesty, even an insult to many of those whom we pretend to admire. What gives us the right to say that the inspirations or voices of poets, inventors, and philosophers that we glorify are merely odd manifestations of their "own" genius... Even when these role models advise us to remain humble and attentive to those Others who they were fortunate, the say, to listen to?
Does the demonstration of God's existence require some for of preliminary prayer or invocation?
...This leads Aristotle in turn to the demonstrated fact that God, glory and majesty to Him, does not do things by direct contact. God burns things by means of fire; fire is moved by the motion of the sphere; the sphere is moved by means of a disembodied intellect, these intellects being the 'angels which are near to Him', through whose mediation the spheres [planets] move... thus totally disembodied minds exist which emanate from God and are the intermediaries between God and all the bodies [objects] here in this world.

...
What if we were all accompanied by angels or spirits or devas or daemons? Then, the very question "Does God exist?" would look like asking "Do we have a healthcare system?" in the middle of an hospital with nurses and doctors running around everywhere.
I propose that the answer to the big question is sabotaged by religious people themseves, to the extent that they hide the fact that God's "existence" is proven if and only if we aknowledge personal relationships with those spirits etc.

Need more science!! Proof! Research!
The Bicameral Mind
First, let me make a few generalizations about the Iliad. To me and to roughly half of classicists, it is oral poetry, originally spoken and composed at the same time by a long succession of aoidoi or bards. As such, it contains many incongruities. Even after it was written down in about 800 B.C., perhaps by someone named Homer, it had many interpolations added to it even centu- ries later. So there are many exceptions to what I am about to say, such as the long speech of Nestor in Book XI for example, or the rhetorical reply of Achilles to Odysseus in Book IX.
But if you take the generally accepted oldest parts of the Iliad and ask, “Is there evidence of consciousness?” the answer, I think, is no. People are not sitting down and making decisions. No one is. No one is introspecting. No one is even reminiscing. It is a very different kind of world.
Then, who makes the decisions? Whenever a significant choice is to be made, a voice comes in telling people what to do. These voices are always and immediately obeyed. These voices are called gods. To me this is the origin of gods. I regard them as auditory hallucinations similar to, although not precisely the same as, the voices heard by Joan of Arc or William Blake. Or similar to the voices that modern schizophrenics hear. Similar perhaps to the voices that some of you may have heard. While it is regarded as a very significant symptom in the diagnosis of schizophrenia, auditory hallucinations also occur in some form at some time in about half the general population (Posey & Losch, 1983). I have also corresponded with or interviewed people who are completely normal in function but who suddenly have a period of hearing extensive verbal hallucinations, nusually of a religious sort. Verbal hallucinations are common today, but in early civilizatio I suggest that they were universal.

Acupuncture
Meridians are part of our bodies and have nothing to do with what we've been taught about our bodies.
Science fascists are extremely vulnerable to acupuncture. 1. It attacks the very basis of "basic reality". 2. It has profound ethical implications, because acupuncture is a medicine, and a medicine which treats pain. 3. It is extremely accessible and unspectacular, as opposed to what science fascists value.

[Displaying of the infrared radiant track along meridians on the back of human body]

Based on the technique of infrared information, we improved the experimental method and displayed the meridian courses over the body surface successfully. Observation of the meridians on the back was performed on 23 healthy adults in this work, and 164 lines of infrared radiant track have been recorded. About 40% of them travelled through the back from lumbus to neck and their courses coincided or basically coincided with Du meridian and Urinary-Bladder meridian in that region. Several meridian courses could be displayed simultaneously in the observation. Symmetry was one of the important characters of the infrared radiant track on back region and it appeared alone in one side only in occasional case. The intensity of infrared radiation was the highest in Du meridian, the medial line of Urinary-Bladder meridian in second and the lateral line of Urinary-Bladder meridian was the lowest. Since there are no large blood vessels in longitudinal direction in the subcutaneous tissue of this region, therefore, the radiant track recorded obviously bared no relation to the large blood vessels. The above results demonstrated that the courses of Du meridian and Urinary-Bladder meridian were inherent in human body and could be displayed objectively.

OBJECTIVES: Stimulation of acupuncture points (acupoints) located on meridians has been proven to activate specific areas of the human brain, as evidenced by functional imaging studies. To date, the specificity of acupoints located on different meridians has been investigated with functional magnetic resonance image (fMRI). The present fMRI study explored the effects of stimulating 4 acupoints on 2 different meridians for the purpose of researching the characteristic response of acupoints on the same meridian. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The acupoints studied were LR3 (Taichong) and LR6 (Zhongdu), which belong to the Liver meridian of Foot-Jueyin; ST36 (Zusanli) and ST43 (Xiangu), which belong to the Stomach meridian of Foot-Yangming; and 2 nearby sham acupoints. Fifty-three (53) healthy right-handed subjects were divided randomly into 6 groups. Each group only received acupuncture at one acupoint. All the acupoints in this study were stimulated only on the right side of the subject's body. Through analysis of fMRI data from all subjects, we obtained the activation patterns in the central nervous system (CNS) evoked by acupuncture. RESULTS: In contrast to the CNS activation by sham acupoint, the results showed that all 4 real acupoints under consideration had the common effect of activating 2 specific areas of the brain: the bilateral primary somatosensory area and the ipsilateral cerebellum. Acupuncture stimulation of both acupoints LR3 and LR6 evoked activation at the ipsilateral superior parietal lobe (BA7). Acupuncture stimulation of both acupoints ST36 and ST43 evoked activation at the ipsilateral middle frontal gyrus (BA10). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that different acupoints on the same meridian may activate certain similar areas of the brain. In addition, acupoints that are commonly used in clinical practice might modulate a greater extent of cortical areas than uncommonly used acupoints.

Damn junk science! "Cellphone radiation is good for Alzheimer's mice"
Despite years of demonisation, mobile phones might actually do us more good than harm. Regular exposure to an electromagnetic field identical to the ones produced by mobile phones seems to improve memory in mice with symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.
If this is what it takes for "evidence-based" scientists to accept that things like cell phone do have an effect, so be it! At least they'll have to accept the other evidence sooner or later. Cellphone therapy, someone?
