To date, the specificity of acupoints located on different meridians has been investigated with functional magnetic resonance image (fMRI). The present fMRI study explored the effects of stimulating 4 acupoints on 2 different meridians for the purpose of researching the characteristic response of acupoints on the same meridian. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The acupoints studied were LR3 (Taichong) and LR6 (Zhongdu), which belong to the Liver meridian of Foot-Jueyin; ST36 (Zusanli) and ST43 (Xiangu), which belong to the Stomach meridian of Foot-Yangming; and 2 nearby sham acupoints. Fifty-three (53) healthy right-handed subjects were divided randomly into 6 groups. Each group only received acupuncture at one acupoint. All the acupoints in this study were stimulated only on the right side of the subject's body. Through analysis of fMRI data from all subjects, we obtained the activation patterns in the central nervous system (CNS) evoked by acupuncture. RESULTS: In contrast to the CNS activation by sham acupoint, the results showed that all 4 real acupoints under consideration had the common effect of activating 2 specific areas of the brain: the bilateral primary somatosensory area and the ipsilateral cerebellum. Acupuncture stimulation of both acupoints LR3 and LR6 evoked activation at the ipsilateral superior parietal lobe (BA7). Acupuncture stimulation of both acupoints ST36 and ST43 evoked activation at the ipsilateral middle frontal gyrus (BA10). CONCLUSIONS: '''These results suggest that ''different'' acupoints on the ''same'' meridian may activate certain ''similar'' areas of the brain'''. In addition, acupoints that are commonly used in clinical practice might modulate a greater extent of cortical areas than uncommonly used acupoints. </td> <td> <span>+ </span> OBJECTIVES: Stimulation of acupuncture points (acupoints) located on meridians has been proven to activate specific areas of the human brain, as evidenced by functional imaging studies. Several meridian courses could be displayed simultaneously in the observation. Symmetry was one of the important characters of the infrared radiant track on back region and it appeared alone in one side only in occasional case. The intensity of infrared radiation was the highest in Du meridian, the medial line of Urinary-Bladder meridian in second and the lateral line of Urinary-Bladder meridian was the lowest. Since there are no large blood vessels in longitudinal direction in the subcutaneous tissue of this region, therefore, the radiant track recorded obviously bared no relation to the large blood vessels. In addition, imbalances in GSH levels affect immune system function, and are thought to play a role in the aging process. Just as low intracellular GSH levels decrease cellular antioxidant capacity, elevated GSH levels generally increase antioxidant capacity and resistance to oxidative stress, and this is observed in many cancer cells. The higher GSH levels in some tumor cells are also typically associated with higher levels of GSH-related enzymes and transporters. Although neither the mechanism nor the implications of these changes are well defined, the high GSH content makes cancer cells chemoresistant, which is a major factor that limits drug treatment. Owing to the pleiotropic effects of GSH on cell functions, it has been quite difficult to define the role of GSH in the onset and/or the expression of human diseases, although significant progress is being made. GSH levels, turnover rates, and/or oxidation state can be compromised by inherited or acquired defects in the enzymes, transporters, signaling molecules, or transcription factors that are involved in its homeostasis, or from exposure to reactive chemicals or metabolic intermediates. GSH deficiency or a decrease in the GSH/glutathione disulfide ratio manifests itself largely through an increased susceptibility to oxidative stress, and the resulting damage is thought to be involved in diseases, such as cancer, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease. To me and to roughly half of classicists, it is oral poetry, originally spoken and composed at the same time by a long succession of aoidoi or bards. As such, it contains many incongruities. Even after it was written down in about 800 B.C., perhaps by someone named Homer, it had many interpolations added to it even centu- ries later. So there are many exceptions to what I am about to say, such as the long speech of Nestor in Book XI for example, or the rhetorical reply of Achilles to Odysseus in Book IX.<br> + But if you take the generally accepted oldest parts of the Iliad and ask, “Is there evidence of consciousness?” the answer, I think, is no. People are not sitting down and making decisions. No one is. No one is introspecting. No one is even reminiscing. It is a very different kind of world.<br> + Then, who makes the decisions? Whenever a significant choice is to be made, a voice comes in telling people what to do. These voices are always and immediately obeyed. These voices are called gods. To me this is the origin of gods. I regard them as auditory hallucinations similar to, although not precisely the same as, the voices heard by Joan of Arc or William Blake. Or similar to the voices that modern schizophrenics hear. Similar perhaps to the voices that some of you may have heard. In addition, acupoints that are commonly used in clinical practice might modulate a greater extent of cortical areas than uncommonly used acupoints.</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace 1http://www.philosophical-investigations.org/users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace_12009-12-28 02:55:40PerigGouanvic(quick edit) <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace 1<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 63: </td> <td> Line 63: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ <br> + ''Am J Chin Med. 2007;35(2):231-40.<br> + Appearance of human meridian-like structure and acupoints and its time correlation by infrared thermal imaging.<br> + Yang HQ, Xie SS, Hu XL, Chen L, Li H.''</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace 1http://www.philosophical-investigations.org/users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace_12009-12-28 02:52:58PerigGouanvic <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace 1<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 58: </td> <td> Line 58: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ <br> + =Acupuncture=<br> + Meridians are part of our bodies and have nothing to do with what we've been taught about our bodies.<br> + ==Evidence==<br> + ===Infrared===<br> + ''Zhen Ci Yan Jiu. 1993;18(2):90-3, 89.<br> + [Displaying of the infrared radiant track along meridians on the back of human body]<br> + [Article in Chinese]<br> + Wang P, Hu X, Wu B.<br> + Fujian Institute of TCM, Fuzhou.<br> + <br> + Based on the technique of infrared information, we improved the experimental method and displayed the meridian courses over the body surface successfully. Observation of the meridians on the back was performed on 23 healthy adults in this work, and 164 lines of infrared radiant track have been recorded. About 40% of them travelled through the back from lumbus to neck and their courses coincided or basically coincided with Du meridian and Urinary-Bladder meridian in that region. The above results demonstrated that the courses of Du meridian and Urinary-Bladder meridian were inherent in human body and could be displayed objectively.''</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace 1http://www.philosophical-investigations.org/users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace_12009-12-25 18:55:43PerigGouanvic(quick edit) <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace 1<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 52: </td> <td> Line 52: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ - see children's stories<br> + - end of life "phenomenology"<br> + <br> + = After AGW, 9/11... =<br> + http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/2009-2010/the_unofficial_story/<br> + ''On September 11, 2001 the world watched in shock and disbelief as planes flew in to New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington, and Americans realized they were under attack. Ned_Ballatori@urmc.rochester.edu<br> + <br> + Glutathione (GSH) plays an important role in a multitude of cellular processes, including cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis, and as a result, disturbances in GSH homeostasis are implicated in the etiology and/or progression of a number of human diseases, including cancer, diseases of aging, cystic fibrosis, and cardiovascular, inflammatory, immune, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases. The present report highlights and integrates the growing connections between imbalances in GSH homeostasis and a multitude of human diseases.''</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace 1http://www.philosophical-investigations.org/users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace_12009-12-24 04:51:40PerigGouanvic(quick edit) <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace 1<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 21: </td> <td> Line 21: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ New Scientist</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace 1http://www.philosophical-investigations.org/users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace_12009-12-24 04:50:59PerigGouanvic(quick edit) <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace 1<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 19: </td> <td> Line 19: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>-</span> ''Air ionisers wipe out hospital infections </td> <td> <span>+</span> ''Air ionisers <span>'''</span>wipe out<span>'''</span> hospital infections </td> </tr> </table> </div> users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace 1http://www.philosophical-investigations.org/users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace_12009-12-24 04:50:35PerigGouanvic(quick edit) <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for users/PerigGouanvic/Workspace 1<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 19: </td> <td> Line 19: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ''Air ionisers wipe out hospital infections<br> + <br> + 3 January 2003 by Natasha McDowell<br> + <br> + Repeated airborne infections of the bacteria acinetobacter in an intensive care ward have been eliminated by the installation of a negative air ioniser.<br> + <br> + In the first such epidemiological study, researchers found that the infection rate fell to zero during the year long trial. Males, like autists and Aspergers (''define Asperger'') but to a lesser extent, love many kinds of systems: machines, computers, (''fill with a long long list!''). We can see this expressed to the extreme in autists, and especially Aspergers.
